ORIGIN OF ASSISI BRANCH OF THE SPCA
It was in July 1982 that Dr Francois van Niekerk in Humansdorp approached the National SPCA essentially for their authorization to start a branch in this area, so he can be regarded as the ‘founder’ of the Assisi Branch.
The desire for a local animal welfare society had also materialized around the same time in Jeffrey’s Bay, where a group of passionate animal lovers spearheaded by Lance Stockdale, and fully supported by caring people such as Dr Dave Hartley, Frank Richter and Marge Schorn, joined forces with Dr Van Niekerk and his concerned supporters, as well as the Humansdorp Lions Club
Lance Stockdale became more and more aware of the suffering of local animals, as his home was in close proximity to both the industrial area and the local township and he rescued many animals and had taken them to Dr Dave Hartley for help and rehoming.
National SPCA was delighted about the potential new branch and first meetings took place early 1983.
The Second Chairman was Frank Richter – he was the first ‘hands-on’ chairman, as the first had been more of a figurehead.
There was an ethos of great idealism, and certainly a huge amount of hard work was done. Large sums of money had to be raised before anything could materialize. It was great to have Frank in the Chair, as he was also a member of the local Town Council. Unfortunately no land was on offer for an SPCA in Jeffrey’s Bay, so that is why it was built in Humansdorp.
Our primary and motivating concern is the prevention of cruelty to all living creatures and the promotion of the humane treatment of animals through leadership, education, and law enforcement.
What Drives Us
MANDATE
Some situations that may appear as though the SPCA must get involved, aren’t actually within our mandate. Our mandate is to prevent cruelty, and in a country that spans over a million square kilometres, our Inspectors must place their focus on cases where the Animals Protection Act is being contravened.
